SANBS runs low on life saving blood

The South African National Blood Service is urging residents to help them save people’s lives, Northglen News reports.
The KZN provincial SANBS has revealed that it has just over one day of blood available. The blood donor service says this means they will not be able to meet the demand for blood by patients.
“So many people in life-threatening situations require blood. It’s what saves that haemorrhaging mother’s life, so that she can raise and love the baby she has just brought into the world. It’s what saves someone suffering complications during major surgery. It’s what helps that cancer patient endure and survive treatment,” said Sifiso Khoza, Regional Marketing Manager for the SANBS.
Umhlanga Netcare Hospital has answered to the SANBS’ call by hosting a 12-hour blood drive.
“Netcare Umhlanga Hospital was only due to have its blood drive in October but we decided to bring it forward after SANBS made the call. Our drive will be from 7am to 7pm on Friday, 14 September and we are calling on everyone who can donate to come through,” said the hospital’s Sanjay Tuckooriah.
Minimum requirements to donate are:
- Weigh at least 50kg or more
- Between 16 and 65 of age
- In good health
- Leading a sexually safe lifestyle
- Consider your blood safe for transfusion to a patient
