A Toyota Fortuner and two Toyota Legend 50 bakkies were yesterday morning recovered by SANDF members at Komatipoort near the border to Mozambique.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala says the SANDF notified the police and an investigation was launched.

“The single-cab Toyota Legend 50 was reportedly stolen in Alberton, the Toyota Fortuner in a hijacking incident in Mothotlung, North-West, and the Toyota club cab Legend 50 in Springs – all earlier this month,” Mohlala adds.

The reason why the vehicles were abandoned is unknown.

“No one was arrested, but we will continue to look for the suspects. We urge anyone with information that may assist in apprehending the suspects to call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111, or use the MySAPS app. All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous.”

Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Manamela, the provincial police commissioner, praised the example set by the SANDF members, and their understanding of the various roles played by law enforcement agencies in the fight against crime.

“The cry by South Africans against theft, hijacking and robbery of cars destined to neighbouring countries has been heard, and the state agencies are working collaboratively to address this challenge,” she said.
