SANParks confirms 3 deaths in Harkerville Forest blaze

Little is known about the circumstances that led to three people being killed in a treetop chalet in the national park.

Three people died in a mystery fire at an upmarket treetop chalet in the Garden Route National Park in Harkerville Forest on Thursday.

Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Christopher Spies says the circumstances surrounding the tragedy are being investigated.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established, he adds.

SANParks also confirmed the fire and deaths, but says it could not supply further information at this stage. More details are expected to be made available later today or tomorrow.

On the SANParks website the chalet is marketed as follows: “A getaway in the treetops. The chalet is spacious, has two bedrooms with bathrooms en suite and is superbly appointed. It is the ideal place to enjoy the peace of the forest.”
