SAPS now re-enlisting former police officers

Applicants must bear in mind that they will be subjected to a thorough screening process, which will include, but not be limited to a psychological assessment, fingerprinting, reference checking, medical testing and screening of former SAPS employment records.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has commenced with the process of re-enlisting former police officers, Ladysmith Gazette reports.

The SAPS hereby welcomes applications from former members with the ranks of constable, sergeant and warrant officer. Only those who meet the prescribed criteria, as stipulated below, will be considered.

Successful candidates will also only be re-enlisted in the ranks they previously held in the SAPS and be remunerated on the minimum salary notch applicable to their relevant rank.

A national advertisement inviting former members to apply for re-enlistment in the SAPS has been published today (October 29) in the following newspapers under the careers section: The Sunday Times, Rapport and City Press. Information about the re-enlistment is also available on the SAPS website www.saps.gov.za  under the heading ‘Careers’.

The focus of the re-enlistment process aims to improve capacity in different SAPS environments, focusing on the capacitation of the following prioritised environments in all provinces and operational divisions, as well as the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation:

  • Public Order Policing (POP);
  • Tactical Response Teams (TRT);
  • K9;
  • Flying Squad;
  • Family, Child & Sexual Offences Unit (FCS);
  • Stock Theft Unit;
  • Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit (VCIU);
  • Organised Crime Investigations: Crime Detection (OCI:CD);
  • Commercial Crime Investigations: Crime Detection (CCI:CD); and
  • Police Stations

The following criteria will be considered when screening the applications:

Applicants must:

* Be a South African citizen, of which documentary proof must be furnished;

* Be proficient in at least two of the official languages, of which one must be English;

* Have been appointed as a member of the South African Police Service in terms of the Police Service Act, 1995; serving in the rank of constable, sergeantor warrant officer;

* Be in possession of at least a Grade 12 (Senior Certificate) or higher qualification;

  • Have at least a valid light motor vehicle license (code B);

* Have successfully completed basic police training and relevant functional police training courses, where applicable, for operational posts;

  • Have a good disciplinary and attendance record during their former employment in the SAPS;

* Submit himself or herself to a medical examination as determined by the National Commissioner;

* Undergo a psychological assessment as determined by the National Commissioner and be found to comply with the profile of a police official;

* Not have any tattoo marks which will be visible when wearing a uniform and not be irreconcilable with the objectives of the SAPS;

* Have no previous criminal convictions, and / or pending criminal, disciplinary cases and such person shall allow his or her fingerprints to be taken and allow background enquiries to be made;

 * Not have been declared unfit to possess a firearm;* Be prepared to be deployed based on the needs of the Service, which may include having to relocate at one’s own expense and or to accept a post away from one’s current place of residence that could result in reasonable travelling;

* Not be involved in any business or activity that will be in conflict of interest with the integrity of the Service;

* Successful applicants for appointment will be vetted in terms of Chapter 7, Part 2 of the Children’s Act, 2005 (Act No 38 of 2005) or the National Sex Offenders Register [section 42 of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act, 2007 (Act No 32 of 2007)]. A candidate whose particulars appear in either the National Register for Sex Offenders or Part B of the Child Protection Register will be disqualified from re-enlistment;

* Candidates are expected to disclose if he / she is a respondent in an interim or final protection order in terms of the Domestic Violence Act, 1998 (Act No 116 of 1998) or Protection from harassment Act, 2011 (Act No 17 of 2011), and may be disqualified from appointment to that post;

* Be willing to undergo a refresher course or any other training as determined by the National Commissioner.

Former members, who left the SAPS on retirement (early retirement or who reached compulsory retirement age), were dishonourably discharged and / or dismissed from the SAPS, left the SAPS pending the conclusion of a disciplinary enquiry and / or criminal proceeding or left the SAPS longer than 10 years ago will not be considered for re-enlistment.

Applicants must bear in mind that they will be subjected to a thorough screening process, which will include, but not be limited to a psychological assessment, fingerprinting, reference checking, medical testing and screening of former SAPS employment records.

The re-enlistment process is a force multiplier and does not replace or affect the normal recruitment and training process known as the Basic Police Learning Development Training (BPLDP).

The closing date for applications is November 9, 2018, and no late applications will be considered.
