Sassa scams: Agency warns beneficiaries to constantly verify details
Numerous complaints have been received about beneficiaries’ details being changed without their knowledge.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) in Mpumalanga is advising R350 grant beneficiaries to constantly check if their contact details is still correct, after an influx of complaints of scams.
The agency says their Customer Care Unit has received numerous calls from beneficiaries, complaining that their details have been changed.
Sassa says beneficiaries must be aware of a circulating WhatsApp message where scammers are offering to assist applicants in doing their applications.
By surrendering personal details to strangers, they can change the contact details on behalf of the applicant.
The agency warns R350 grant beneficiaries to handle applications themselves or only ask the help of a person they trust.
Sassa says the customer care official cannot change beneficiary contact details without their request.
The process of changing contact details requires the identity number of the beneficiary and after that, the beneficiary receives the OTP number on his or her cellphone.
The official will then request the OTP from the applicant in order to update or change contact details.
To verify or change contact details, beneficiaries must log in to the official website.
