Schools rugby: Jeppe stalemate Selborne, Hilton pip rivals

Michaelhouse College was defeated 20-17 by Hilton College in the Midlands Derby due to an outstanding defencive performance.

A dramatic day of school rugby saw Jeppe score a try in the last play to hold Selborne to a draw, while Hilton held out for a win against Michaelhouse in the Midlands Derby.

Jeppe and Selborne played to a nail-biting 34-34 stalemate on the Siya Kolisi field on Saturday, the second day of the Grey High Rugby Festival.

Jeppe flew into an early 12-0 lead, but Selborne fought back to take a 17-12 lead into the break. The Eastern Cape school then appeared to have secured a win when they went 34-17 up in the second half. A massive comeback from Jeppe saw the Johannesburg school narrow the scores in the final 10 minutes and then snatch a draw with a last-minute converted try.

Meanwhile, Hilton continued their winning streak in the Midlands Derby by holding out for a 20-17 victory over Michaelhouse. It was Hilton’s ninth-straight win in the derby, having not lost to their rivals since 2016.
