Security guard shoots dead two of three robbers

An inquest docket has been opened after a security guard shot three robbers, killing two of them, when the men tried to rob him in Hammarsdale, Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal.

The 33-year-old man was walking to work in Ballim Road, Hammarsdale when he was allegedly approached by the three armed men on Friday at about 4.30pm, Highway Mail reported.

“The victim, who works as a security guard, defended himself and shot at the men, instantly killing two unidentified men and wounding the third. Two firearms, suspected to belong to the robbers, were recovered at the scene,” said Colonel Jay Naicker.

The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistics tests to ascertain if they had been used in any other crime in the country, added Naicker.

The KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, appealed to the community to remain vigilant when travelling to and from work, either early or late at night.

“We have opened an inquest docket, and no stone will be left unturned to uncover what transpired,” said Ngobeni.

In a separate incident, one of three armed suspects was shot in the back during a business robbery in Springs, on the East Rand last Monday.

Springs police official Amanda Greybe said the suspects searched the victims and took three cellphones, a tablet and an undisclosed amount of money before running away.

The business owner had his firearm with him, which the suspects did not see, added Greybe.

“When the suspects ran away, the owner of the business and his sister chased after suspects to 6th Avenue, where he saw one of the robbers and shouted ‘drop your gun, or I will shoot’,” said Greybe.

It is believed the suspect fired at the owner, who also opened fire and wounded the robber.
