Security guard shot and killed following cash-in-transit heist

A security guard has been shot and killed at the Phoenix plaza in KwaZulu-Natal following a shootout when a group of suspects allegedly targeted a cash-in-transit vehicle.

Head of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Prem Balram said the deceased was removing boxes of cash from a client’s premises when he was accosted by two armed suspects yesterday. The suspects fired four shots at the security guard before fleeing on foot with the boxes, Phoenix Sunreported.

The company’s spokesperson, Gareth Naidoo, said despite efforts made by medical personnel to revive the victim, he was pronounced dead on the scene.

“He was killed by a bullet that entered his heart in the crossfire,” added Naidoo.

Investigations are ongoing.

In a separate incident, a security guard was shot three times during a robbery on Maxwell Street inEmpangeni, KwaZulu-Natal yesterday.

Empangeni police spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose said a man opened fire on the guard, who was on his way into Standard Bank to conduct personal banking, wounding him in the back and in the head.

The suspects, who made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and a firearm, fled in a silver Volvo, registration number NPN 52523, said Mdlalose.

The victim was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.
