Sedibeng mayor and driver found safe after alleged kidnapping

The pair were last seen at a house in Alberton whereafter they were allegedly kidnapped.

Sedibeng executive mayor Lerato Maloka and her driver have reportedly been found unharmed following reports of an alleged hijacking and kidnapping on Friday.

Vaalweekblad reports that the pair were last seen in Alberton on the East Rand, shortly before they were reported missing. Their vehicle was later discovered abandoned, prompting urgent search efforts.

Authorities were alerted of the alleged kidnapping after the owner of the house Maloka had visited reportedly contacted an acquaintance, who in turn informed Maloka’s husband.

According to police, they were informed around 02:00 on Saturday that Maloka and her driver had been located and safely reunited with their families.

The incident sparked widespread concern, with political leaders and the public expressing alarm over the safety of women in leadership.

Police have not yet released further details regarding the circumstances of the incident, or whether any arrests have been made. Investigations are ongoing.
