Six suspects arrested following Edenvale shootout

Six men have been arrested after a business robbery and subsequent shootout with police in Edenvale, Gauteng.

Edenvale police acting spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Robbie Roberts said he had just left Edenvale Police Station when a call was received of a robbery in progress at Redline Liquor Store, on Van Riebeeck Avenue last night, Bedfordview Edenvale News reported.

“As I turned my vehicle on to Van Riebeeck Avenue, I saw four of the suspects running towards me,” added Roberts.

“The four men were arrested, and I was alerted of two more suspects running along 8th Avenue,” said Roberts.

Redline car guards, George Skosana and Patrick Chake, were in pursuit along with reaction officers from ADT, added Roberts.

When the remaining suspects realised they had been spotted, they opened fire at police, who then retaliated.

More than 15 shots were fired before the men were arrested, said Roberts.

Video footage shows the aftermath of the incident, with police on the scene. The suspects are seen handcuffed on the ground.

The two vehicles used by the suspects were searched, and police recovered a large amount of alcohol and two firearms.

Nikitas Loannu, the owner of the store, said it was the second time in three weeks that his store was robbed.

Investigations are under way to determine if those arrested are the same group that targeted the store three weeks prior.

Roberts told The Citizen all the suspects would appear in the Germiston Magistrates’ Court tomorrow to face charges of business robbery, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and stolen property.
