The estranged husband of 23-year-old Boitumelo Gift Mashita, who was shot and killed in Thembisa yesterday (September 28), has been found dead inside his vehicle in Midrand, reports the Kempton Express.

Gauteng police identified the man as a person of interest in Mashita’s murder, prompting the SAPS Tembisa Tracking Team to search for him.

Shot on way to work

Mashita was shot at about 05:45 in Temong, Mapungubwe Street, while reportedly on her way to work.

Mashita was identified at the scene by her uncle, MC Khoza.

Khoza told the Kempton Express and The Thembisan that Mashita’s belongings were found at the scene, although her cellphone was missing.

Vehicle found at police station

According to SAPS, the investigating team subsequently linked Mashita’s estranged husband to the murder and began tracing him.

“The team was later informed by Midrand police that the man’s vehicle had been found within the Midrand Police Station precinct, with his body inside,” said SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili.

“No foul play is suspected at this stage,” said Muridili. “A post-mortem examination will be conducted to establish the exact cause of death.”

Midrand police will register an inquest case while the circumstances surrounding his death are investigated.

Police are continuing to investigate Mashita’s murder.

According to SAPS, preliminary investigations have not established a link between Mashita’s death and recent cases involving the bodies of women found in Ekurhuleni.
