A case of attempted murder has been opened after armed men tried to force their way into a room and fired two shots.

A two-year-old child sustained a gunshot injury after armed men forcefully attempted to gain entry into a residence at the corner of Boundary Road and Park Street in Brakpan, Ekurhuleni.

Brakpan Herald reports that, according to police information, the child and his mother were sleeping when the mother was awakened by a loud noise outside at around 22:50 last Friday.

She heard a man shouting several times. Initially, she ignored it, but soon after, additional voices joined in.

The mother became frightened when the men started kicking at the door to her room, and she screamed for help.

During the incident, one of the men fired a shot, and the bullet grazed the child on the left hip. After the shooting, the men fled the scene in a white Toyota Etios.

A total of two shots were fired. The child was transported by ambulance to the Far East Rand Hospital for medical treatment.

At the scene, police recovered one live round and one spent cartridge, both from a 9mm pistol.
