Son burns down parents’ house just outside Tzaneen

Law enforcement officers are searching for a man accused of burning down his parents’ home, while the family have offered a R5 000 reward for information that leads to his arrest.

Ritavi police have launched a manhunt for a 35-year-old man who allegedly set fire to his parents’ home in Mariveni village outside Tzaneen on Friday night.

Letaba Herald reports that Limpopo police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, says the incident occurred late in the evening when the suspect, identified as Vusi Mnisi, was seen pouring a flammable substance inside the house while family members were present.

“His mother reported hearing an argument and someone crying. When she went to investigate, she saw Vusi pouring the substance inside the house while her granddaughter tried to stop him. He then poured the substance on both of them before they managed to escape and call for help. By the time they returned with neighbours, the house was already engulfed in flames,” says Ledwaba.

The suspect then fled the scene in his car. Police have since opened a case of arson and are appealing to the public for assistance in locating him.

The Mnisi family has offered a R5 000 reward to anyone with information that could lead to his arrest.

Those with information are urged to contact Sergeant Vulani Ngobeni on 082 319 9699, call Crime Stop on 08600 10111, use the MySAPS app, or visit the nearest police station.

Investigations are continuing.
