SPAR recalls yoghurt products nationally after production fault

Consumers are urged to return affected items with August sell-by dates to their nearest store for a full refund.

Anyone who has purchased SPAR fat-free yoghurt, low-fat yoghurt, double-cream yoghurt, Indulge double-cream yoghurt or SPAR active drinking yoghurt with a sell-by date of August 9 and a use-by date of August 12 is advised not to consume the product.

Randfontein Herald reports the National Consumer Commission (NCC), in a statement, alerted consumers to the recall of selected SPAR yoghurt products following a notification from the retailer.

Production defect causes swelling

The NCC is South Africa’s consumer protection regulator, responsible for safeguarding consumers’ interests and ensuring accessible, transparent and efficient redress under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008.

The affected products were sold nationally through SPAR stores from June 15.

According to the company, the recall was prompted by a machine malfunction during production, which resulted in the products swelling or ‘blowing’.

This defect may alter the yoghurt’s taste, smell and appearance, and consuming the affected products may cause stomach upset.

Consumers who have purchased any of the affected products are urged not to consume them. Instead, they should return the products to their nearest SPAR store for a full refund or exchange.

The NCC has encouraged consumers to respond promptly to product safety recalls.
