Stage 3 loadshedding going into weekend
A downscaled level of load-shedding was expected to continue going into the weekend, power utility Eskom revealed on Thursday.
“Due to reduced demand and the much improved weather, Eskom will reduce load-shedding to stage 3 starting at 08:00 until 22:00 tomorrow [Friday],” spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha said.
“To replenish generation reserves, load-shedding will then continue into the weekend.”
This was due to the system which reportedly remained unreliable and vulnerable.
“Eskom will continue to communicate the stage of load-shedding should there be any further developments,” he said, adding that their teams had successfully returned a generation unit each at four power stations – Tutuka, Matla, Majuba and Camden.
“However, two other units suffered breakdowns during the period.”
Mantshantsha said the unplanned breakdowns amounted to 11 185 MW of capacity, adding to the 5 040 MW which were out due to planned maintenance.
“Eskom teams are working around the clock to return as many of these generation units to service as possible,” he said.
South Africans were urged to reduce their electricity usage to assist the power utility reduce the instance of load-shedding.
