Suspect killed in Mpumalanga farm attack
A suspect was shot and killed, and another was arrested following an apparent farm attack near Amersfoort in Mpumalanga on Sunday afternoon.
Six men, some of whom were armed, reportedly attacked Rolfontein Farm just after 5.30pm, New Castle Advertiser reported.
While the exact circumstances surrounding the attack are unclear, it was believed that a shoot-out ensued between the attackers and local farmers who came to the aid of the victims.
The suspects had reportedly been waiting at the home when the farmer, his wife, their teenage daughter and her friend arrived home.
One suspect was fatally wounded and another injured during the attack.
Life Care Rescue paramedic Jan van Loggerenberg said a female victim had sustained a laceration to her face and was later treated on the scene.
Captain Braam Robberts of the Amersfoort Police confirmed the arrest of one suspect and the death of another.
“We are currently investigating a case of house robbery and murder,” he said.
Robberts added that the arrested suspect was due to appear in the Amersfoort Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
Robberts said the identity of the shooter had not yet been made clear.
“The farmer was not armed. We are currently investigating the incident to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.”
The suspects reportedly took two cellphones, cash and a pistol registered to the female victim.
Four suspects are believed to be on the run.
In a separate incident, two men were arrested for allegedly attacking an elderly couple on their farm in Vierfontein, Free State, earlier this year.
The suspects, one of whom was a former employee of the couple, were arrested and found in the possession of unlicensed firearms.
