Suspect sought for KZN nun’s murder, rape

No arrests have yet been made after the alleged murder and robbery of an elderly Roman Catholic nun in Ixopo, KwaZulu-Natal, provincial police on Tuesday said.

According to police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane, Gertrude Tiefebacher, 86, was accosted by a lone suspect at her residence on Saturday night. It is believed the suspect then tied Tiefebacher’s hands with a cord before covering her face with a towel and suffocating her.

“It is alleged that foreign currency had been taken from Tiefebacher’s room. It is also suspected that the victim was raped before she was killed,” Zwane said.

Zwane added police in Ixopo were appealing to anyone with any information regarding the suspect’s whereabouts.

“Anyone with information about the murder suspect is requested to contact Ixopo SAPS investigating officer Warrant Officer Thembelihle Hlangu on 076 828 9582 or branch commander Warrant Officer Zindela Madondo on 076 919 0372,” he said.

In June last year, a 26-year man was arrested for the murder of 82-year-old nun Mary Paule Tacke in the Eastern Cape.

Tacke was hijacked and kidnapped by two men from the Thembelihle orphanage in Mthatha . Her body was found in Nangeni, in a small stream in the veld. Both men were later arrested.
