Suspected business robber shot in Durban
One of three suspects involved in a business robbery has been shot dead in Phoenix, Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal.
It is alleged three robbers entered the shop on Tuesday and informed the victim they wanted to buy some chips, then walked around the shop. One of the suspects approached the victim at gunpoint and demanded cash, said provincial police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane.
Zwane added the suspects forced the victim to lie down and opened a safe. Cigarettes valued at R2 000 and an undisclosed amount of cash were taken. The suspects fled the scene towards Zwelisha area after the incident.
“The matter was reported to the police, and a description of suspects was circulated to patrol vans,” said Zwane.
Later, Verulam police spotted the suspicious-looking vehicle in the area with three occupants. The said vehicle was stopped, and one of the suspects allegedly pulled out his firearm and pointed it at the police, added Zwane.
Police allegedly shot and killed the suspect.
A 9mm pistol with no serial number was found in his possession. The other two suspects aged 26 and 27 were arrested and will be charged with business robbery. Both suspects will appear in the Verulam Magistrates’ Court soon.
In a separate incident, a case of armed robbery has been opened, along with another one of murder, against the victim who shot a suspect during a robbery in Bezuidenhout Valley Park, Johannesburg early last month.
Four armed men allegedly approached five male friends who were socialising in Bezuidenhout Valley Park and held them up.
“While the suspects were searching through the vehicle, the victim who had refused to be searched pulled out a gun and shot the robber who was carrying the firearm. The other three suspects fled the scene,” said Constable Mpho Mashakane.
