Suspected KZN taxi hitman killed in shoot-out

The man was being sought in connection with at least eight taxi industry related murders.

A man who was suspected of being involved in several taxi related killings in Umbumbulu in KwaZulu-Natal, was killed on Monday during a shoot-out with police in Durban.

The suspect, aged 35, was being sought for six murders in Scottburgh and two in Umbumbulu when he was cornered at a house in Braid Avenue in Seaview, during a police operation.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda says the man, who was involved in the taxi industry in the KZN South Coast area, started shooting at police officers and a shoot-out ensued.

According to Netshiunda the suspect was fatally injured during the gunfight.

“A 9mm pistol with a filed-off serial number as well as ammunition was found in his possession.”

Netshiunda says the Independent Police Investigative Directorate has been informed about the incident for further investigation.
