Thabo Mbeki inaugurated as Unisa’s new chancellor
The university says Mbeki was appointed for the position because of his outstanding leadership and credentials.
Former president Thabo Mbeki has been inaugurated as the chancellor or the University of South Africa (Unisa), reports The Citizen.
Mbeki replaces Judge Bernard Ngoepe, who served as chancellor of Unisa for 15 years.
The institution on Monday said it was excited about Mbeki’s new role, saying his intellectual standing would add to Unisa.
Mbeki was found to be a suitable candidate for the position because of his outstanding leadership and credentials.
His foundation has partnered with the university through programmes, including the Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute, Thabo Mbeki Presidential Library and South African Democracy Education Trust.
Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande and vice-chancellor Professor Mandla Makhanya were among the speakers at the ceremony.
