Three escape from East Rand police cells

Police have launched a manhunt after three men escaped from the holding cells of the Primrose Police Station on the East Rand.

During the early hours of this morning, the Primrose police shift commander discovered the men had escaped by breaking through the wall under one of the windows in a holding cell, Germiston City Times reported.

The men were in the cells after being arrested for possession of dagga, housebreaking and theft and business robbery, respectively.

“It is unknown at this stage what they used to break through the wall,” Germiston cluster police spokesperson said Warrant Officer André de Jager said.

An investigation into the escape has since been launched .

Last week, three prisoners described by police as highly dangerous dug a hole in the wall of their cell and escaped in Bellair, Durban.

Police discovered the men had escaped while conducting a routine check early in the day.

The men were being held for murder, possession of stolen property and the possession of a firearm, respectively.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker warned the public that the men were dangerous and pleaded with the community to not try apprehend them but contact the police as soon as possible.
