Three shot in Joburg taxi violence

Three people were shot and one suspect arrested in an alleged taxi violence dispute on Woodmead Drive in Sunninghill, in the north of Johannesburg.

Police spokesperson Kym Cloete said the taxi violence started just before 4pm on Woodmead Drive, near the R55 on Wednesday, Sandton Chronicle reported.

“One suspect was arrested on the charge of attempted murder, and one firearm was confiscated,” said Cloete.

She added three victims were shot and wounded.

One taxi was reportedly burnt, while another was damaged in the melee.

The incident came hours after a taxi owner was shot dead at Bree Taxi Rank in the Johannesburg CBD on Wednesday morning.

Two unknown gunmen allegedly approached the victim from opposite sides and shot him in the back.

The suspects then reportedly “disappeared” into the busy rank and the taxi owner was later declared dead on the scene by paramedics.

Last month, a taxi owner, three drivers and a passerby were seriously wounded after a taxi-related shooting in Atteridgeville, in the west of Pretoria.

The cause of the incident is believed to have stemmed from a dispute between two rival taxi associations.
