Toddler (2) dies after shelf allegedly collapses at Bedfordview preschool

A little boy was one month shy of his third birthday at the time of his death.

A boy (2), who was one month shy of his third birthday, died yesterday after a shelf at his preschool in Senderwood, Bedfordview, reportedly collapsed onto him.

The child’s father Ntaote Mokhele said he was contacted at about 10:30 on March 7 and was informed his son Kganya had been injured at school.

Sergeant Lillian Modiga, corporate communications officer at Bedfordview SAPS, said it was alleged the boy was in a classroom with other children and teachers when the shelf with toys collapsed.

“The staff removed the shelf. The child was bleeding and he was taken to another room and first aid was administered. An ambulance was called and he was transported to Linksfield Hospital where he was certified dead,” said Modiga.

Mokhele said he was on his way to the school when he was informed to go to Linksfield Hospital.

Bedfordview and Edenvale News attempted to obtain comment from the school to no avail.
