Toddler dies in George bus accident

A bus filled with rugby players and supporters was involved in an accident in George yesterday evening, leading to the death of a toddler. Three people are being treated in hospitals for injuries sustained in the accident.

A two-year-old toddler has died in a bus accident that occurred on Heights Road between Wilderness Village and Wilderness Heights in George last night.

According to Ben Brinkhuis, incoming president of SWD Rugby, the boy is the grandson of Excelsior Rugby Club’s vice chairperson.

A total of 35 rugby players and supporters of Excelsior Rugby Club from Wittedrift, Bitou, were in the accident.

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies two people are being treated in George Hospital while a third person has been transferred to Knysna Hospital.

The accident happened just after 18:00 yesterday.

Brigadier Nolan Michaels of the George Police visited the scene this morning alongside other police officials and towing services. By 11:00 this morning teams were still trying to retrieve the bus from the slope.

Excelsior played a league match against NMU yesterday afternoon. They were on their way back to Wittedrift when the accident occurred. The bus left the road and drove down a slope. It landed on the patio of a residential house.
