Toyota triumph 24 Hours of Le Mans qualifying ahead of Saturday race

Motorsport enthusiasts have an action packed weekend to look forward to with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend coinciding with the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Circuit de la Sarthe will be abuzz with the sounds of over 60 endurance challengers.

It was car No 8, the Toyota GR010 Hybrid driven by former Formula 1 driver Brendon Hartley who managed to put his bespoke hyper car on pole position, clinching it in the dying moments of the session from favourite Kamui Kobayashi in the sister No 7 car.

The solitary Alpine A480-Gibson looks to be the more competitive of the remaining challengers in the class, with the duo of Glickenhaus 007 LMH a well over a second off of the 3:24.408 pole position time.

The Toyota GR010 can be driven in the virtual world for the first time compliments of the most recent Gran Turismo 7 update.

Further down the grid, Robin Frijns racing for Team WRT in the Oreca 07 – Gibson clinched the class pole in the LMP2 category.

Of the 27 class entries dominated by the Oreca car, only one other model being the Ligier JS P217 – Gibson is vying for the win.

The Chevrolet Corvette C8.R in the GTE Pro class reigned supreme with Nick Tandy behind the wheel while the sister car of the Corvette racing team locked out the front row of the grid with a duo of Porsche 911 RSR-19 and Ferrari 488 GTE Evo snapping at their heels. This category should yield some exciting viewing with the tight competition at the top.

The Ferrari 488 GTE Evo of Vincent Abril came out on top in the GTE Am category with a Porsche 911 RSR-19 and Aston Martin Vantage AMR close behind in the full class.

All of the top tier racing in the world’s greatest endurance race will start at 16:00 on Saturday the 11th of June. More information on the weekend schedule can be found at the 24 Hours of Le Mans website.
