Traffic officer left injured after hit-and-run in Knysna

Several incidents of hit-and-run are being reported across the country, with three known incidents occurring in a single day in Knysna, Ermelo and Durban.

A routine traffic stop on Main Street, N2, turned violent last night when a traffic officer was hit, allegedly by a fleeing motorist, at Knysna Mall.

According to reliable information, the officer first spotted the vehicle, occupied by two men, on the N2 ignoring a red traffic signal, reports Knysna-Plett Herald.

Traffic officials attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver refused to stop, initiating a chase.

The pursuit ended at the mall, where the vehicle became trapped due to the lack of an exit.

It is understood that the traffic officer exited his patrol vehicle and approached the driver with the intention of issuing a fine. At that point, the driver accelerated and the officer was hit, allegedly by the fleeing driver, leaving him seriously injured.

The driver with the passenger fled the scene but was reportedly arrested within two hours at Buffalo Bay. Police have not yet released the names of the suspects.

The injured officer was transported to hospital for medical treatment. His condition has not yet been confirmed.

An enquiry has been sent to police for official comment regarding the charges the suspects may face and the condition of the officer.

Another hit-and-run incident in Ermelo

In a separate incident yesterday, Highvelder News reported that a man was taken into police custody following a hit-and-run incident in De Bruin Street that left a female pedestrian injured.

The arrest followed a rapid response from local security members after the driver fled from the scene.

Deon van Zyl from Highveld Security and Jaco Kirk from Spartan Security and Training arrived at the scene to gather information regarding the vehicle and the driver involved.

A third hit-and-run incident on the same day

Northglen News reported on a hit-in-run incident where a 27-year-old male is expected to appear in the
Durban Magistrate’s Court tomorrow on charges of culpable homicide and failure to stop at an accident scene, following his arrest in connection with a hit-and-run incident that occurred at the Adelaide Tambo and Mackeurtan Avenue intersection in Durban North, KZN, yesterday afternoon.

A female pedestrian sustained fatal injuries after being struck by the vehicle.

According to Durban North police spokesperson Sergeant Nonhlanhla Shozi, the suspect was arrested yesterday and remains in police custody.
