Tragic N4 accident claims life of respected Mpumalanga doctor
Police are still investigating the circumstances of the fatal multi-vehicle crash outside Malelane in which a well-known local doctor died.
A tragic multi-vehicle accident on the N4 just outside Malelane on September 27 claimed the life of one of Nkomazi’s most respected doctors, Dr Sipho Nanku Mahlangu (50).
A contracted sessions doctor at Tonga Hospital, Mahlangu had performed a surgery that day and was on his way home when the incident happened. His Mercedes-Benz collided with a VW Amarok and an articulated truck.
The truck driver escaped with minor injuries while the driver of the bakkie sustained serious injuries.
Moeti Mmusi, the spokesperson of the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, said that the cause of the accident was unknown.

Motorists had to wait two hours for the scene to be cleared. The community shared their condolences on Facebook and described Mahlangu as one of the best doctors.
He qualified as a general practitioner at the University of Cape Town and did his internship at Themba Hospital in KaBokweni. He went on to complete his community service at Sabie Hospital. Despite having completed these regulatory service years, he continued to serve as a medical officer at various hospitals and clinics in the province while running his own private practice, Phetolo Medical Centre in Tonga.
Dr EK Thobejane shared a tribute to honour his life:
“It was his dedication to his patients that endeared him to the hearts of many. The family remains indebted by the messages of condolences to his wife, Nomasonto Mahlangu, and his two sons.”
Mahlangu’s family expressed their gratitude for all the support and asked the community to allow them space to mourn during this difficult time.
His memorial service was held on Wednesday at Mizinti Holiness Church and his body will be laid to rest at his home town of Madubaduba today.
