Tropical storm Cheneso: 5 more KZN beaches closed as precaution

The system is not expected to directly impact South Africa, however, precautions have been taken across the province.

Following the announcement yesterday that three beaches in the KwaDukuza municipal area will be closed due to the tropical storm Cheneso, five South Coast beaches have also been closed for bathing until further notice.

The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board (KZNSB) has been tracking the movement of tropical storm Cheneso, which has made its way across the Indian Ocean since last Friday – and first making landfall on Madagascar.

The death toll on the island country has been reported at 16.

KZNSB said that although the cyclone is moving in a south-easterly direction, it is expecting the swell size to increase and has taken the precautionary measure of banning bathing at certain beaches in the province.

On the South Coast:

Margate main beach, Ski-boat Bay (Ramsgate), Trafalgar, Leisure Bay and Port Edward.

Others in KZN:

Blythedale, Thompson’s, Clarke Bay, Umdloti, Laguna, Thekweni, Country Club, Battery Beach and Bay of Plenty, Pipeline and Winklespruit.

The South African Weather Service in a statement yesterday said Cheneso should not pose a major risk to South Africa, with the system expected to continue travelling eastwards into the ocean.
