Two arrested after fatal stabbing in Mpumalanga

A 33-year-old man died following an altercation while his mother was en route to report the dispute.

Two men, aged 32 and 23, have been arrested and charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of a 33-year-old man in Ext 2, Mhluzi, Mpumalanga on Friday evening, (October 30), reports Middelburg Observer.

A Mhluzi man was allegedly stabbed to death with a sharp object that Mhluzi SAPS identified and took into evidence over the weekend in Ext 2, while the victim’s mother was accompanying patrol officers to and from the police station, Captain Mpho Nonyane-Mpe confirmed.

According to a statement issued by Mpumalanga SAPS provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Nkankoane Apaphia Modise, officers received a report of a fight at 20:40 on Friday night.

When officers arrived, they spoke to the victim’s mother, who told them that her son had allegedly been involved in an argument with a tenant before she left the property with the patrol officers to go to the police station to make a statement about the conflict, Nonyane-Mpe confirmed.

The officers were accompanying the woman to the police station to open a case, when she asked to return home, saying she would come back on Monday, (November 2).

However, while they were travelling with her, community members stopped the officers and alerted them that the victim had been stabbed.

Police found the 33-year-old with stab wounds. He was declared dead at the scene.

Arrests made

Nonyane-Mpe confirmed that the deceased had been identified, but the name had not been released by the time of publication.

The two men were arrested at the scene and each face one count of murder. Police also confiscated a sharp object believed to have been used in the incident.

The motive for the stabbing has not yet been established.

“The case is being investigated by Mhluzi police,” said Nonyane-Mpe.

She also confirmed that both suspects are expected to appear in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, (November 2).

Police have appealed to anyone with information that could assist the investigation of the murder in Mhluzi, Middelburg to come forward.
