Two arrested for assault on Knysna police officer

Two young men will face charges of attempted murder and assault, while a third was arrested for defeating the ends of justice.

Two men have been arrested for assault after an attack on a lieutenant colonel from the Knysna Police Station on Friday.

“Investigation into the attack reveals that the lieutenant colonel was in the Knysna central business district when he was accosted by a group of men,” says Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies.

“He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital by a member of the public.”

The two arrests were made later the same day. “The suspects, aged 21 and 22, are facing charges of attempted murder and assault with the intent to commit grievous bodily harm,” Spies explains.

“A 57-year-old man was also arrested for obstructing a member to exercise his duties. They remain in police custody and are expected to make a court appearance today.”

Spies adds that the Western Cape police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, welcomed the arrest of the suspects.
