Two construction workers killed in Phoenix structural collapse

Tragedy struck in Phoenix, KZN, as two construction workers were killed when a retaining wall collapsed, burying them under rubble.

Two men were killed when a retaining wall collapsed on a construction site in Canehaven Drive, Phoenix, on Saturday, The Witness reports.

Reaction Unit South Africa spokesperson Prem Balram said their operations centre received an emergency call from a member of the public reporting that workers had been trapped under debris.

Reaction officers and paramedics were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they found both men buried under rubble, with no signs of life. They were declared dead on the scene.

According to reports, the men, aged 27 and 29, were Mozambican nationals working for a construction company.

They were digging a trench when a retaining wall, along with sand and metal reinforcements, collapsed on them.

Firefighters from the eThekwini Fire & Rescue Services were on site on Saturday, working to recover the bodies.

Authorities are investigating the incident.
