Two copper thieves arrested in Krugersdorp

Two suspects have been arrested after they were found in possession of copper cables in Matshela, Tarlton, in Krugersdorp on the West Rand.

Tarton police spokesperson Lucky Matome said police were on patrol on Wednesday when they saw the two suspects, one of them carrying a backpack. The suspects ran away after seeing police who then gave chase on foot.

“The suspects were then arrested. When police opened the backpack, they found copper cables worth approximately R15 000,” added Matome.

Both suspects will appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court soon, facing charges of suspected stolen property.

In a separate incident, video footage shows an alleged copper thief who was caught in the act of stealing copper piping in Lana Street in Witbank on Monday. When asked by one of his captors, the suspect explains why he was stealing.

In the video, the suspect is heard saying unemployment is one of the reasons he steals.
