Two Durban cops shot dead while guarding a councillor’s home

The suspects then proceeded to rob the victims of their firearms.

Unknown gunmen remain at large after they allegedly gunned down two Metro Police officers, who were guarding a councillor’s house, in Bhambayi, Phoenix, on Monday night, Phoenix Sun reports.

Metro Police spokesman, senior superintendent, Parboo Sewpersad confirmed the incident.

“The two officers were on councillor protection duty when they were shot and killed. We cannot at this stage confirm their identities as the families of the victims still need to be informed,” he said.

According to reports, the officers were seated in a Metro Police vehicle at about 9:40 pm when the unknown suspects accosted the vehicle and opened fire.

The suspects then proceeded to rob the victims of their firearms.

Aware of gunshots outside of his home, the councillor then took his gun, ran outside and returned three gunshots.

Cllr Zulu told the Phoenix SAPS that he saw three suspects running to their getaway car, while he returned fire. Both officers succumbed to their injuries and died at the scene.
