Two nabbed after hijacked tobacco van overturns

Two suspects were arrested after a bakkie loaded with cigarettes was found overturned in Mtwalume, KwaZulu-Natal, after it had been hijacked.

An on-duty police officer was passing a tuck shop on the R102 in Hibberdene, south of Durban, at about 11am when he was stopped by community members, South Coast Herald reported.

“They informed the officer that they had witnessed the hijacking,” police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said.

Community members then told police the hijackers had forced the driver of the bakkie into the back of the vehicle before driving off.

“The hijackers dropped the driver off in Mtwalume. When they drove off, however, [they] lost control of the vehicle and it overturned,” Wiid added.

Two suspects – a passenger and a driver – were arrested, while two others, who were sitting in the back of the overturned vehicle, fled the scene.

All the cigarettes were recovered and investigations are still ongoing.

In a separate incident, about three armed robbers attacked a British American Tobacco vehicle in Brackenhurst, Alberton, on Thursday.

The suspects reportedly offloaded cigarettes into their bakkie before driving off.

After an ensuing car chase and shootout with Fidelity security guards, the suspects reportedly crashed into a tree before jumping over a fence and fleeing the scene.
