UDM’s deputy president kidnapped, released after R10 000 ransom

A ransom had to be paid for the safe release of Nqabayomzi Kwankwa who was ambushed and abducted by armed men in Driftsands.

The United Democratic Movement (UDM) says its deputy president, Nqabayomzi Kwankwa, has been left shaken after being kidnapped yesterday afternoon.

Kwankwa was on his way to Cape Town International Airport to attend the presidential inauguration in Pretoria when he was ambushed and abducted by armed men in Driftsands, Mfuleni.

The party confirmed that it paid a R10 000 ransom to secure Kwankwa’s release.

UDM president Bantu Holomisa said the party is saddened by this horrific event, but grateful for his safe return.

“We wish Tshawe [Kwankwa] a speedy recovery from this dastardly incident,” Holomisa added.

Western Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said an anti-kidnapping multidisciplinary task team has been formed to find Kwankwa’s kidnappers.

She added the task team is currently investigating the incident, which saw Kwankwa being hijacked, kidnapped, and robbed by armed suspects.

His vehicle was later found abandoned in the Khayelitsha area.

The investigation continues, and no arrests have been made yet.
