Ugu Tourism extends condolences, urges visitors to check weather alerts
South Coasters are doing their utmost to clean up after the floods to make the area as attractive as possible to potential visitors.
Ugu South Coast Tourism extends its sincere condolences to those who’ve lost loved ones and suffered during what has been the biggest flood to hit the province in decades.
Phelisa Mangcu, CEO of USCT, said it was impossible to give a blanket update on the current situation as different areas are facing different challenges. However, authorities are working around the clock to attend to all affected areas.

“The floods did impact the local water structure, but the latest update from Ugu District Municipality indicates that the St Helen’s Pump Station is back on line and water supply is returning. All systems are sequentially being opened for supply with the gradual restoration of the water supply throughout the district,” she said.
For now, all beaches remain closed due to safety concerns although collective efforts have seen massive beach clean-ups underway.
The infrastructure damage has been localised which means that some of the establishments on the KZN South Coast are still operating. While some businesses are welcoming visitors, others are currently not operational so it’s important to contact tourism operators directly.
Contact details are available on the free ‘Explore KZN South Coast’ app from Google Play and Apple stores or visit www.visitkznsouthcoast.co.za.
USCT would like to echo Tourism Minister, Lindiwe Sisulu’s appeal to visitors who are travelling over the Easter weekend to do so safely, and return to their homes safely.
“Out of this tragedy we’ve once again witnessed the indelible community spirit that makes the KZN South Coast such an incredible destination. It is clear that President Ramaphosa’s call for us to pull together as a country and reach out to affected communities has been heard by our residents. We admire the community spirit and would like to extend our appreciation to all those who are selflessly doing what they can, where they can.”
“If possible, we encourage the support of local tourism operators by purchasing vouchers for future holiday opportunities, or ordering gifts online. This assists with cash flow during these incredibly difficult times,” she concluded.
