Unlicensed AR15 rifle and ammunition seized in KZN arrest

A 21-year-old man was arrested in Stanger Manor after police seized an unlicensed AR15 rifle, ammunition and CPF berets during a joint operation.

A 21-year-old man was arrested after being found in possession of an unlicensed rifle and large quantities of ammunition in Stanger Manor yesterday.

According to The North Coast Courier, the operation was carried out by the iLembe district police in partnership with the Tactical Response Teams from KwaDukuza, Empangeni and Ulundi.

Firearm and ammunition seized

Police approached the suspect at his residence, where a search led to the recovery of an unlicensed AR15 rifle, 195 live AR15 rounds, 37 shotgun rounds and 17 rounds of 9mm ammunition. Two empty AR15 shells, believed to have been previously fired, were also found in his possession.

Police also seized Community Policing Forum berets from the suspect.

Court appearance expected

The man was arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. He is expected to appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court soon.

The rifle will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether it was used in any criminal activity.

Police have traced the registered owner of the firearm and KwaDukuza detectives will continue with further investigations.
