Stanger Manor man arrested with unlicensed AR15 rifle and ammunition
The firearm will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether it has been used in any criminal activities.
A 21-year-old man was arrested after being found in possession of an unlicensed rifle and large quantities of ammunition in Stanger Manor on Monday.
The operation was carried out by the iLembe District Police in partnership with the Tactical Response Teams from KwaDukuza, Empangeni and Ulundi.
Police approached the suspect at his residence, where a search led to the recovery of an unlicensed AR15 rifle, 195 live AR15 rounds, 37 shotgun rounds and 17 rounds of 9mm ammunition. Two empty AR15 shells, believed to have been previously fired, were also found in his possession.
Police also seized Community Policing Forum (CPF) barrettes from the suspect.
The man was arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. He is expected to appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court soon.
The rifle will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether it was used in any criminal activity.
Police have traced the registered owner of the firearm and KwaDukuza detectives will continue with further investigations.
