UPDATE: Funeral underway after Azaadville deaths

The man who allegedly set himself and his four-year-old grandchild alight in his car on Wednesday in Azaadville on Gauteng’s West Rand will be laid to rest today.

Randfontein CPF executive committee chairperson Zaheer Gangat said the funeral would be held at Seva Samaj Hall from 11am to 12pm, Randfontein Herald reported.

Gangat said the funeral would depart at 12pm from Seva Samaj Hall to Lenasia Crematorium for the bodies to be cremated.

Provincial police spokesperson Kay Makhubela said the boy’s father went to work with his wife when he received a call from his father-in-law, who said he had the boy and was going to set a car on fire with the boy inside.

Gangat said the community was notified that a car was on fire in Azaadville and that they should bring fire extinguishers to put out the blaze. The community stood together to try and stop the blaze, but it was too late.

An unidentified security guard said he was patrolling the area when he was notified that a car was on fire.

The security guard said: “When I got there, I saw the car in flames, and it was so powerful, there was nothing I could do to save the child,” The Star reported.

“While I was trying to put out the flames, I looked through the car’s window, and the only thing I could see was the man’s leg burning,” added the security guard.

Makhubela said the two deceased were burned beyond recognition.

The motive behind the incident remains unknown. An inquest docket is under investigation.
