UPDATE: Polokwane filling stations robbers arrested
Four of the six armed robbers who detonated unknown explosives at two different petrol filling stations in Polokwane on Monday have been arrested.
Polokwane police spokesperson Captain Ntobeng Phala said the Crime Intelligence Unit acted on a tip-off that led to the arrest of three men and a woman in Pretoria yesterday afternoon.
Two of the men were found in possession of R71 000 cash, which is believed to be part of the money stolen during the blasts, added Phala.
“A silver grey BMW used as a getaway car was recovered abandoned in Ga-Masemola Village. It was discovered the car was last hijacked from a medical doctor in Motetema Township in February this year,” said Phala.
Investigations also revealed that one of the robbers (a soldier), who was arrested at a lodge in Pretoria with an accomplice, had already used part of the money to buy a tractor trailer that cost R53 000, added Phala.
All suspects will appear at the Polokwane Magistrates’ Court on April 28.
CCTV footage obtained by Review Online shows a cloud of smoke all over the kiosk after the suspects had blown off the filling station’s safe.
