UPDATE: Wire dog transporters skipped the country

In a wild twist, the individuals sought by police and the SPCA for allegedly transporting two dogs on the back of a bakkie with wire tied through their mouths have fled the country after images of the incident went viral on social media.

“Because of the social media explosion, they knew we were looking for them and decided to skip the country with the dogs,” Sandton SPCA spokesperson Candice Scorer said.

Although she would not specify which country the suspects had fled to, Scorer confirmed it was a neighbouring country. “We are currently working with that country’s equivalent of the SPCA to find them,” she said.

Earlier today, the owner of the dogs – who wished to remain anonymous – said he had gotten rid of the animals because they kept fighting with his other pets. “I gave the dogs away because they were fighting with my other dogs. I am a family man. I have other animals, and they are in good condition. I do not know where [the other two] are now,” he told Fourways Review.

Although involved in the case, Scorer said the man was only an accessory and would only be charged depending on the outcome the SPCA’s investigations. She added no further information could be provided while investigations were still being carried out.
