VIDEO: Dash cam captures dramatic hijacking

A video clip has surfaced showing the hijacking of a car in the Fordsburg area of Johannesburg.

The incident, which was captured on the vehicle’s dashboard camera, allegedly took place on Saturday, May 30, on Main Reef Road, near the M2 on-ramp, North Eastern Tribune reported.

In the video, four armed men driving a white VW Jetta with the registration DL65CLGP are seen emerging from the car and approaching the unidentified hijacked vehicle.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo urged anyone who could identify the alleged hijackers to contact police.

“Motorists need to be aware of their surroundings at all times. It was a difficult situation to get out of, however, the best method of preventing a situation like this is for the driver to keep a large enough following distance from the vehicle in front of them,” he added.

This after a video emerged showing the hijacking of an elderly woman in the Clear View area of Somerset West, in the Western Cape, in April. According to a post on YouTube by Crime Watch, 86-year-old Sue Smuts had just returned home from grocery shopping when she was approached by a lone suspect.

In the video, the man is seen knocking on Smuts’ car window before putting his hand through a small opening and yanking the woman out of the vehicle. According to Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk, a 37-year-old man was arrested shortly after the incident.
