VIDEO: Elderly woman hijacked in the Western Cape

A video has emerged showing the hijacking of an elderly woman in the Clear View area of Somerset West, in the Western Cape.

According to a post on YouTube by Crime Watch, 86-year-old Sue Smuts had just returned home from grocery shopping when she was approached by a lone suspect on Wednesday, April 29. In the video, the man is seen knocking on Smuts’ car window before putting his hand through a small opening and yanking the woman out of the vehicle.

The man is then seen driving off while a stunned Smuts struggles to get up. Another man approaches her and helps her up. It is believed the assailant made off with Smuts’ white Fiat Uno and about R271 worth of groceries. Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said a 37-year-old man has since been arrested.
