A Pietermaritzburg businessman died from gunshot wounds sustained in an armed robbery at a family business at a local shopping centre yesterday.
The man, whose identity is withheld as his next of kin are yet to be informed, died in hospital shortly after several armed men stormed the jewellery shop based at the Park Lane Centre in the CBD.
Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Sergeant Sifiso Gwala says preliminary reports indicate that the man was shot four times in the chest.
Gwala says a murder charge and attempted business robbery case has been registered for investigation.

“The man came into direct confrontation with two armed robbers, aged 32 and 36, while at the shop with his mother. There’s a search on for a third suspect.
“The deceased managed to get his firearm when the two suspects got distracted when his mother rushed to the door to block a third suspect from accessing the shop. One suspect was shot in the head while the other was shot in the arm and the side.
“They are both under police guard in hospital,” says Gwala.
When The Witness got to the scene, shoppers and motorists were standing on the pavement and in the parking lot, watching the police processing the scene.
Those who spoke to The Witness said that the area was momentarily deserted as people dashed back inside the shops when the gunshots rang out.
They said they did not see what was happening inside the jewellery shop, as they came outside when it was quiet, with security companies and the police having taken over the scene.
