Video: KZN school choir scoops top honours in Spain
The choir from St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls in Kloof secured a winner's medal at the Golden Voices of Barcelona event.
St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls in Kloof, KZN, was in Lloret de Mar in Spain recently to compete in the Golden Voices of Barcelona competition.
According to Highway Mail, they returned victorious, winning first place in the folklore category to receive the winner’s medal, as well as achieving second place in the sacred category.
Head of music and choir conductor Lindy van der Meulen said: “Our history of success with our choirs has been exceptional and I want to say to our 51 girls and five staff, thank you for representing both our school and South Africa with such excellence, passion, and pride.
“Your hard work, dedication, and love of music have truly paid off, and these results are a wonderful reflection of your talent and commitment.”
Success on the global stage
In 2018, the St Mary’s choir was crowned world champion in scenic folklore at the World Choir Games in Tshwane, and in 2023 they were awarded gold and silver medals at the World Choir Games in South Korea.
“So, to return victorious in 2026 with first and second and the winner’s medal has been a dream come true for both our tour choir and our entire music department,” Van der Meulen said.
