[VIDEO] Man beaten in apparent mob justice incident in Polokwane CBD

According to unconfirmed reports, the man is suspected to be part of a group of criminals who steal the bank cards of unsuspecting victims at ATM's in the city.

POLOKWANE – A video has been shared on social media of a man being assaulted earlier this week  (Friday, 23 April).

The incident happened near the corner of Thabo Mbeki and Hans van Rensburg streets and according to unconfirmed reports, the man is suspected to be part of a group of criminals who steal the bank cards of unsuspecting victims at ATM’s in the city.

The video depicts a man being beaten with what seems to be a broomstick. Bystanders are seen taking videos of the incident.

Review notified the police of the incident, but they could not confirm it.

These events are common in the city and residents have previously been asked to avoid withdrawing big sums of money, especially in the CBD and downtown areas.

Tips to avoid becoming a victim:

• Always pay close attention to the ATM and your surroundings. Do not select an ATM at the corner of a building because corners can create a blind spot.

• Maintain an awareness of your surroundings throughout the entire transaction. Be wary of people trying to help you with ATM transactions.

• Be aware of anyone sitting in a parked car nearby. When leaving an ATM make sure you are not being followed.
