Video: Search underway after light aircraft crashes into sea off Durban

A light aircraft was doing displays and crashed into the ocean on Thursday near Suncoast Beach.

A light aircraft has crashed into the Indian Ocean, in front of the Suncoast beach in Durban on Thursday.

Garrith Jamieson, director of ALS Paramedics, said they are still searching for the pilot.

The Witness reports ALS Paramedics, together with SAPS and Metro Police search units as well as eThekwini Fire Department and NSRI are on scene whereby a plane has crashed into the ocean.

“Initial reports are that the light craft was doing displays and crashed into the ocean. NSRI and life guards are on the site, and paramedics are on standby on the shoreline for medical assistance,” said Jamieson.

He added that by 15:00 on Thursday, a police helicopter was still searching for the pilot.

“Life savers are also in the water. All necessary authorities are in attendance; however, the pilot has not been found yet.”
