VIDEO: Stray cow rescued from manhole

The increasing number of stray cattle remains a concern in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal after a cow was being rescued from a manhole in the Alton area yesterday, SPCA inspectors have said.

Video footage of the incident shows the cow being rescued from a manhole by a team of men using a tractor’s front end loader, Zululand Observer reported.

Eggerding SA Director Cliff Eva along with with his plant manager Laurens Beytell and workshop manager Flip Kapp were first on the scene.

In the video, the cow is seen gently lifted out the manhole after numerous attempts that were aborted lest the animal was in danger of breaking a leg.The cow reportedly sustained minor injuries.

“We are grateful for the superb efforts of all those involved in saving this animal’s life,” SPCA Inspector Shelly Prinsloo said.

“However, we remain concerned about the increasing number of stray cattle as well as the number of open drains and manholes in the City.

“We are regularly called on to rescue dogs that have fallen into such openings,” added Prinsloo.

In another incident, a dog was rescued after she was trapped in a pool filled with snakes in Bluff, KwaZulu-Natal, in January.

A local snake wrangler, Shaun Venter, whose main focus is to retrieve snakes, was alerted to a dog in distress in Brighton Road. The dog was reportedly trapped in a pool with shallow water and bush snakes.

“We could see she was very aggressive, but that was all due to being frightened because of her ordeal,” said Venter. “I managed to get my hook stick under her collar and had to drag her out as she was not moving. She was cold, very tired and had a cut on her paw,” added Venter.

The injured dog was rushed to a vet, where she was examined.
