VIDEO: Two filling stations robbed in Polokwane

Police have launched a manhunt after six armed men detonated unknown explosives at two different petrol filling stations in Polokwane earlier today.

In a statement, Polokwane police spokesperson Captain Ntobeng Phala said the six heavily armed men, who had covered their faces with balaclavas, stormed a petrol filling station next to Savannah Mall along Thabo Mbeki street at about 1am.

Phala said a customer who had just finished buying from the kiosk was accosted by the suspects, ordering her and other stuff members to lie on the ground.

CCTV footage obtained by Review Online shows a cloud of smoke all over the kiosk after the suspects had blown off the filling station’s safe.

The suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene.

Phala added the suspects proceeded to another petrol filling station in Penina Park, where they ordered everyone in the kiosk to lie on the ground and told the cashier to empty the till before they blasted the safe containing an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspects are then seen fleeing the scene, getting in the same getaway vehicle.

Investigations are ongoing.

Police are appealing to the public to come forth with any information regarding this incident to contact the commander of Organized Crime Unit, Lieutenant Colonel Johanna Phoshoko on 071 481 3163.

Last month, two ATMs were bombed in the Free State. An armed gang of 15 people arrived at the Standard Bank ATM on Bok Street at 3.28am in a white Mercedes-Benz and a Toyota Yaris, said Captain Stephen Thakeng. They used an explosive device to bomb the ATM and took cash.

The other ATM was was bombed at 1.50am when four people armed with automatic rifles arrived at a petrol station in Kutloanong in a white Mercedes-Benz arrived and held up petrol attendants.

“An undisclosed amount of cash was robbed. Then the four suspects walked towards an ATM, explosive devices were used to bomb it, and cash was also stolen,” said Thakeng.
