Wanted murder suspect killed in dramatic police shoot-out in Durban

The armed suspect, wanted for murder and attempted murder, died after reportedly firing at officers while travelling in a minibus taxi toward Durban CBD.

A wanted murder suspect has been killed following a shoot-out with police in Maydon Wharf on Monday, Berea Mail reports.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza said the deceased was sought for a series of cases, including murder and attempted murder, which he allegedly committed at Sawoti recently. He said on Monday, police received information that the armed suspect was heading towards Durban CBD, travelling in a minibus taxi.

“The information was operationalised by police and metro police officers. The minibus taxi in which the suspect was travelling in was spotted by police officers,” said Magwaza.

Upon spotting law enforcement, it is alleged that the deceased drove the minibus taxi straight towards the police officers while firing shots at them.

“Police returned fire, and the suspect was fatally wounded,” said Magwaza. “A case of attempted murder against the police has been registered at Maydon Wharf Police Station.”

He added that two pistols were recovered on the scene. “One firearm was found in the deceased suspect’s possession while the other was recovered inside the minibus taxi,” said Magwaza.

The deceased was also wanted in connection with a case at Mbumbulu, where four people were brutally killed, and for his alleged involvement in a cash-in-transit robbery in Umlazi on December 5.
